Aran Mittens

This mitten will give you practice in various cabling techniques, combining knits, purls, and ribbing, while producing a handsome and elegant mitten.  Learn to read Aran cable charts and work a medallion that is comprised of 10 different cable movements. Create a thumb gusset surrounded by cables, and learn about designing mittens as well.

Length: 6 hours

Level: Intermediate (must be proficient with dp needles, Magic Loop, or working with two circulars)

Size: Medium to Large Woman’s Hand or Small to Medium Man’s Hand

Supply List

  • Approximately 220 yards of sport or DK weight yarn and one set of dp needles US size 4 and 5/ 3.5mm and 3.75mm
  • Tapestry needle, stitch markers, waste yarn or stitch holder, sticky notes or magnetic board for reading the charts

Homework

Make a gauge swatch to achieve 22 sts/4 inches in St st.  Then, knit the cuff:

With smaller dpn, cast on 48 sts, join circularly, place marker.
Rnds 1, 2, 3: *K2, p1; rep from *.
Rnd 4: *K2, p1, C2B, p1; rep from *.
Repeat these four rnds 4 more times.  (Total: 20 rounds.)
NOTE: C2B: K2tog, knit first stitch again.
